Prior to 1991, Ukraine was part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R). Independence Day commemorates the anniversary of the country’s independence of 1991. Young people go to parties to continue celebrating Independence Day and it is said to be the greatest holiday for them! The day is typically filled with different types of social activities prepared by the Municipal, wide ranging celebrations include: evening fireworks, zabavas, concerts, outdoor exhibitions, free public markets and fairs, along with circuses and sporting events. Independence Day is a national public holiday in Ukraine meaning many shops, museums, libraries as well as government offices and educational institutions are closed. ![]() National Independence Day is special day for all citizens, it is a public holiday celebrated across all of Ukraine with large gatherings of spectators and parades of people in traditional folk costumes. Since 2004, August 23rd is also celebrated as the day of the national flag. ![]() Every year, Ukrainians gather to celebrate their nation’s independence on August 24th to mark the declaration of independence of 1991.
